Various training and educational activities will take place online and in person around the country to support HealthMeet pilot sites, healthcare professionals, individuals with ID and their families/caregivers, direct service providers, and medical students. Some of these activities relate directly to the implementation of HealthMeet assessment events while others address issues related to improving barriers to care and/or provide more information on promoting the health and wellness of people with ID.

Activity: HealthMattersTrain-the-Trainer Workshop is an evidence-based 6-hour training developed by the University of Illinois at Chicago that provides structured information on how to organize and start a tailored physical activity and health education program for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) in community-based residential and day/vocational agencies.

Another initiative of The Arc that utilizes the HealthMatters program is the Health and Fitness for All project. Health and Fitness For All is funded through the generous support of the Anthem Foundation. Through this project three of The Arc’s Chapters that are certified in the HealthMatters program, The Arc San Antonio, The Arc Greater Houston, and The Arc Tennessee, will implement the 12-week program to help increase participants knowledge about the importance of healthy eating and staying active.

Activity: The University of Minnesota will continue to develop and deploy health promotion information through its accessible online education platform, Self-Advocacy Online. Four online modules relating to health, wellness and exercise have been added to the website through The HealthMeet project. These lessons use accessible text, audio, pictures and short video clips to help the individual learn to live a healthier lifestyle.

Activity: AUCD developed online training modules educating LEND and UCEDD trainees as well as other health professionals/students about health promotion for individuals with ID as part of their existing LEND curriculum.
Module 1 - Understanding Health and Health Promotion for People with ID is a case-based curriculum focusing on the adult phase of the life and healthcare for individuals with ID.
Module 2 - Communication Skills - in the context of health and wellness. This module increases participants knowledge and skills about communicating with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) regarding written communication, people first language, technology and more.
