Employment Issues for People with Disabilities

Working age people with disabilities are among the most unemployed and underemployed segments of our society. As of January 2010, the percentage of people with disabilities in the labor force was 21.8 percent compared with 70.1 percent for persons with no disability.  Our mission in part is to ensure opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live independent and fully-inclusive lives – and employment plays a big part in that.  Read information about transitioning young people with disabilities from school into the work force with the appropriate supports such as training and continued education.

You can read about the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and keep up with current legislative action regarding employment rights for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
