IDEA Technology and Media

Why the Program is Needed

All children with disabilities have the right to a free appropriate public education designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living.  Technology and accessible media are tools that help ensure that children with disabilities receive an appropriate and effective education.  These services help level the playing field for students who have sensory, intellectual, and physical disabilities that require educational materials to be adapted in ways that make them accessible.

What it Does

Awards grants and contracts to public and certain private institutions to promote the development, demonstration, and use of technology; support educational media services activities designed to be of value in the classroom setting to children with disabilities; and provide support for captioning and video description that is appropriate for use in the classroom setting. This program supports technology development, demonstration, and utilization. Educational media activities, such as video descriptions and captioning of educational materials, also are supported.
