The Leadership Pre-Conference explored principles, techniques and examples of leadership that helped attendees decide in the moment, achieve long term goals and improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities. Read the full story on the NCE website.
Please be looking for an online evaluation of the Pre-Conference that will be placed on the NCE website within the next two weeks. Vantage Point success!
The Arc of Delaware County in NY (Delarc) has a unique training program, Vantage Point, that puts able-bodied individuals into situations where they experience first-hand what it’s like to go through life with a disability. This has received interest from both government officials and industry professionals and by the end of the year it is projected that 100 participants will have gone through the Vantage Point program in 2012.
As part of the Vantage Point program, participants are put through a series of exercises that simulate real-life disabilities. Participants are required to negotiate the physical obstacles encountered from a wheelchair; identify individuals and locations while blindfolded to replicate visual impairments; and engage in a variety of mental exercises that challenge memory and other cognitive functions. At the same time, participants interact with Delarc staff who demonstrate their hands-on approach to care and service.
Participants have come from across NY State and other parts of the country to learn from Delarc, among them staff from The Arc of Fresno in CA, and The Arc of Westchester County. George Suess, CEO of Delarc, point out “As the only organization in NY State with a Board of Directors policy prohibiting any physical intervention, mechanical or pharmacologist restraints, we are very proud of the successes we’ve witnessed among those in our care as a result of our positive approach.” For more information about Vantage Point please visit www.delarc.org.

NCE Silent Auction Success!
The NCE Auction at the 2012 conference was very successful. We brought in a little more than $4700. Donated items came in from all around the country, and included things like a beach house vacation, Indianapolis 500 tickets, several beautiful area wine baskets, specialty alcohol, Southwest tickets, handmade jewelry, a Ping golf club, a tour day in Orange county featuring Disneyland, beautiful wreaths, fun items, electronics, Perske prints, The Arc logo items, paid conference attendance next year, numerous restaurant certificates, and many other valuable items.
Orion Fleet Intelligence sponsored the Auction this year and donated a free trial of their GPS solutions for the auction. Orion helps clients improve their vehicle fleet operations by leveraging the power of GPS location devices and is used by a growing number of local Arcs. With this donation and sponsorship, the value of the Auction outcome was over $7000. This money is raised to support Executive Scholarships for NCE Training.
The committee is grateful to the many donors and the volunteers. We also could not do this event without The Arc assuring the space and the advertising and the support of the Auction.
Change in NCE Membership Rate for Executive Directors - Exciting times are ahead!
The purpose of the change is to encourage EDs of chapters of The Arc who are not currently members of NCE to join now and become involved in the process of shaping the new NCE. The more EDs we can involve in the transition process on the front end, the more the new structure will reflect the leadership of all chapters of The Arc.
If you know any Execs in your state who are not currently members, please talk to them about this opportunity!
To become an NCE member today and help shape the NCE of tomorrow, please complete the membership application posted on the NCE website. (Please note: a membership application must be completed and submitted in order to attain member status).
If you have any questions, contact Carrie Hobbs Guiden, Membership Committee Chair, or via phone at 615-248-5878 x14.
