The Arc Montgomery County has been involved in recycling (document destruction and the thrift store industry) since 2005. In that time, it has trained and supported both paid and volunteer workers with I/DD and have fostered inclusive work environments. The Textile Recycling & Collection Program (“TRCP”) expansion began in January 2013, utilizing various capabilities of its Thrift Store and document destruction business.
Employment opportunities for workers with I/DD will include emptying collection bins, sorting textiles and accessories, processing items appropriate for use in thrift stores, and baling of recyclable items. Although TRCP is currently in its development stage, this project intends to collect approximately 117 tons of textiles for entry into the recycling stream, offer inclusive employment for workers with I/DD and create up to 625 hours of volunteer opportunities for individuals with I/DD.
As a recipient of the current grant offered by The Arc and The Alcoa Foundation, The Arc Montgomery County plans to:
- At maturity, offer inclusive part-time minimum wage employment for six workers with I/DD
- Involve Alcoa volunteers in textile drives and/or collection events
- Engage volunteers with I/DD to promote awareness of the varied abilities and employable skills of individuals with I/DD
- Reduce the negative environmental impact of waste through its commitment to textile recycling
