The Arc's Diversity Vision
Our vision is for The Arc to be a diverse and culturally competent organization, capable of serving people with I/DD and their families in an increasingly diverse, multicultural society. Our boards of directors, executives, and staff are composed of individuals who are representative of the diversity that exists in the communities they serve. Our advocacy, programs, services, and supports are relevant and accessible to persons of different races, ethnicities, and other dimensions of diversity. We are leading the way promoting diversity and cultural competence among organizations that serve people with disabilities and their families, in the disability community and in the larger nonprofit sector.
2016-2020 Diversity Strategic Action Plan
This plan renews The Arc’s commitment to our chapters, our members, the I/DD community and their families, and the public to ensure that ALL communities view The Arc as responsive to their needs. This commitment has been the foundation of the work of The Arc for 65 years.
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities come from all ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, socio-economic status, and religions. That fact is at the heart of our commitment to diversity! In order to ensure no one is left behind, we must examine our hearts, our minds, and our organizational programs and policies to achieve our mission of actively supporting the full inclusion and participation of people with I/DD in the community throughout their lifetimes.
There are 2 goals that drive our strategic action plan:
Goal 1: The Arc will be a leader in diversity in the disability community; and
Goal 2: The Arc’s state and local chapters will be recognized as preferred providers of services and supports to diverse communities.
The strategies to achieve these goals involve work with the public, our board, our staff, and our chapters. Learn more about The Arc’s diversity strategies and key metrics by downloading the full document.
