Gateway to Change - NCE SLI 2017

SLI Recap

The 2017 NCE Summer Leadership Institute was 2 ½ days of sessions, plenaries, networking and fun! See what some attendees had to say:

“Not only did we witness record heat at the 2017 NCE SLI in St. Louis with 108 degrees, we witnessed a record number of first time attendees with 100 in attendance! It was great to see so many new faces mixed in with familiar ones. Even though I've been attending for several years now, I continue to find the sessions filled with tips and tools I can take back and use at my chapter. The highlight for me this year, however, had to be our closing keynote, Joe MacBeth. We all know we are facing a crisis when it comes to employing quality DSPs. He drove home this message in a way that nobody else could- and made it clear that wages are not the only issue. Thanks to the event planning team for another great conference!”
-Carrie Hobbs Guiden, The Arc of Tennessee

“I felt the 2017 SLI was a huge success. I really enjoyed the variety of topics that were available this year, each session had something for every area of interest. As always, the networking was fantastic, many opportunities were given throughout the conference to converse with others from across the nation about their successes and struggles. This conference was very well put together in every aspect including the nightly events. I can’t wait to have another opportunity to attend SLI.”

Judy Westsik

In Memoriam: Judy Westsik

Last week, The Arc lost a partner, an ally, a champion, and a friend. Judy Westsik, Executive Director, The Arc of Tri-Cities passed away on July 21, 2017. In her over 30 years at The Arc of Tri-Cities, The Arc has grown from a staff of four in a small building on Williams Blvd to the thriving organization today with 17 programs supporting individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. One of Judy’s greatest accomplishments was guiding the funding, design, and construction of the new Arc facility on Fowler Street that now bears her name. Through the generous support of donors in the community, the Arc moved to their new facility free of debt. Judy was a member of Leadership Tri-Cities Class VI and an active member of the National Council of Executives of The Arc. In 2016 she received the NCE Chair’s Exemplary Leader Award. Her leadership, her mentorship, her passion, and her heart will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace! Visit her obituary here.
