SIG Description

This group will cover some major topics such as Special Needs Pre-school requirements for all 3 and 4-year-olds, special education laws, parents’ rights and responsibilities and other hot topics in this area. It will have a topic or question listed on the forum page of The Arc webpage each week where participants can log in and join in the conversation. There will also be monthly conference calls on topics of special interest, as well as chance to meet each other in person at The Arc convention in Indianapolis, Indiana in October.

  1. Ilyse Kramer

    Chapter Associate, The Arc, Washington, DC

    Since 2013, Ilyse Kramer has linked chapters of The Arc to professional development resources that will enable them to better serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. She has contributed her skills in technical assistance, research, analysis, social media, and website optimization to a variety of nonprofit and governmental organizations, and is involved with many Washington, DC based associations that support self-advocates such as APSE, DC Public Library's Adaptive Services Program, SchoolTalk DC, TASH, and USICD.

  2. Valerie Williams

    Bowie, MD

    Since graduating from the University of California at Berkeley with a BA degree in Political Economy of Industrial Societies Ms. Williams has accumulated nearly two decades of experience in financial management and program operations. Concurrently, she pursued her passion for helping others through work with non-profits focused on children, health and under-served populations. She recently changed careers and has made her part-time passion into a full-time endeavor.

    In 2014 The Arc of Maryland named Ms. Williams their Volunteer of the Year for her work on the Government Affairs Committee. In addition, she served as the Fall 2014 Paul Marchand Public Policy Intern at The Arc of the United States. More recently, she was named the 2015 Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation Public Policy Fellow. In this capacity Ms. Williams will be working on Capitol Hill to advance legislation to benefit persons with disabilities.

    She is currently a member of the Maryland Down syndrome Advocacy Coalition (MDAC), Parents of Children with Down syndrome of Prince George’s County (PODS), Board Member for The Arc of Maryland and Board Member for The Arc of Prince George’s County.
