Mental Health and IDD Crisis Card
A Mental Health Crisis Can Occur Anywhere at Anytime
A mental health crisis often strikes when least expected. Sudden triggers can cause stress and anxiety to build rapidly. For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), especially those with heightened sensory sensitivities, these feelings are often amplified. In the middle of a mental health crisis, it can be incredibly difficult for the person to express how they’re feeling and to explain to others how to help.
What Is a Mental Health Crisis Card?
A Mental Health Crisis Card is a tool for communication when words fail. It provides critical information about the person’s disability and mental health conditions and actionable steps to help de-escalate stressful situations.
Asking, “How can I help you?” is the best way to offer support during a crisis. However, a person with IDD may not be able to communicate what they need during a mental health crisis. This card helps with that.
“Support is knowing that you can help and being aware that you don’t know how to help.”
– Russell Lehmann, International Disability Rights Advocate, UCLA
How to Use This Card
Fill out the information on both sides of the Mental Health Crisis Card. Provide clear, direct information about what others can do to provide support during a crisis. Include things such as:
- Best ways to communicate (verbally, written, through pictures, etc.)
- Preferred calming techniques
- Words or phrases that help focus or de-escalate
- Triggers or actions to avoid that could escalate the situation, such as physical contact, bright lights, or loud noise
- Numbers to call for immediate help, such as a family member, support person, or therapist
Once the card is complete, print a copy (tip: select “actual size” in page size settings to print in wallet size) to keep in a wallet or purse for easy access. You can also save a photo of the card on your phone.
During a mental health crisis, the card can be handed to someone nearby who can help provide support.
